Civil Engineering is considered as one of the most globally accepted and broader premier branch among other branches of Engineering. The challenges of today’s civil engineering infrastructure are much more complex and are interdependent between various resources. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include Water works, Sewers, Dams, Power Plants, Transmission Towers/Lines, Rail roads, Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Irrigation Canals, River Navigation, Shipping Canals, Traffic Control, Mass Transit, Airport Runways, Terminals, etc. Due to the impact of development in technology, it has diversified into sub branches like Structural engineering, Geotechnical engineering, Transportation engineering, Water Resource engineering, Hydraulics, Environmental engineering, Railway engineering, Urban Infrastructures & Construction technology, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS).
Join us in building the foundation for a better tomorrow!
The department of civil engineering was established in the year 2010-11 with an intake of 60 students and the intake was increased to 120 during the year 2014-2015. Civil engineering labs are essential for testing, analyzing, and researching construction materials and infrastructure, ensuring the safety, durability, and sustainability of built environments. These labs play a vital role in the construction industry by verifying the quality of materials and the structural integrity of projects.
We are equipped to provide prospective engineers with the necessary training and knowledge to enable them to make a meaningful contribution in this area. Initially, the program provides students with a broad base on which their specialist knowledge can be built. The latter years have been designed to produce professional engineers with a good working knowledge of Building materials testing laboratory, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, transportation engineering and software LABS Like AUTO CADD, REVIT & 3ds MAX etc. The Department has an excellent infrastructure to promote a congenial academic environment to impart quality education with well-equipped laboratories and a team of qualified and dedicated faculty members.
The department is delighted to possess the following labs for UG & PG courses. All laboratories are being regularly upgraded and new labs with latest software REVIT and STADD- PRO are added according to the curriculum requirement of the University.
A Building Materials Testing Laboratory conducts tests to ensure the quality and suitability of materials used in construction, covering various aspects like strength, durability, and chemical composition, crucial for safe and reliable structures.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil engineering is a digital process that creates a 3D model of a building, enabling improved collaboration, design accuracy, and project management throughout the lifecycle, from planning to operation.
In a Computer-Aided Building Planning and Drawing lab, students learn to use CAD software to create and interpret architectural drawings, focusing on efficiency, accuracy, and professional standards, with objectives including planning, designing, and understanding submission procedures for building plans.
In a concrete technology lab, quick tests focus on determining key properties like strength, workability, and consistency, using methods like slump, compaction factor, and compressive strength tests.
An Environmental Engineering lab typically focuses on water and wastewater analysis, air quality testing, and solid/hazardous waste management, with experiments covering parameters like pH, turbidity, conductivity, hardness, and pollutants like SOx, NOx, and SPM.
In an Engineering Survey lab, students gain practical experience in surveying techniques using various instruments to measure distances, angles, and elevations, crucial for civil engineering projects.
In an Engineering Geology lab, you'll likely encounter hands-on activities focused on identifying and classifying rocks and minerals, understanding geological structures, and analyzing geological hazards relevant to civil engineering projects.
In a Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics lab, you'll typically explore fluid behavior, including statics, dynamics, and flow measurements. Experiments often involve measuring flow rates, pressure, and head losses, using equipment like venturimeters, orifices, and hydraulic benches.
In a geotechnical engineering lab, common tests include sieve analysis, liquid/plastic limit tests, compaction tests, permeability tests, and shear strength tests, all crucial for understanding soil properties and foundation design.
In a software application lab can be equipped with software like Microsoft Office, programming tools, and statistical analysis software, along with LIMS for managing samples and data.
In a Transportation Engineering lab, you'd typically find equipment and procedures to test materials used in road construction (like aggregates, bitumen, and mixes), analyze traffic flow, and potentially conduct mix design using equipment like the Marshall Stability apparatus.

The road safety awareness walkathon was inaugurated by Dr. L Sanjeev Kumar, Principal SSSE in presence of around 80 students and it is coordinated by Dr. Vijay B G, HOD- Civil and Mrs. Tejaswini C from the department of civil engineering. Road safety teaches people how to conduct themselves while driving or crossing roads. Road safety measures, including the use of road barriers and highway barriers, are aimed at reducing the risks of people getting involved in accidents in the first place. Following these measures, the chances of accidents, injuries and damage to property are vastly reduced.
Department of civil engineering Forum name was inaugurated has “CONSTRUCT” By the chief guest Mr. Mallesh H.B. (Retd. Executive Engineer, PWD Dpt.), Dr. L. Sanjeev Kumar, Principal, SSSE, Dr. Vijay B.G, HOD, Dept. of civil engg, SSSE. Mrs. Srinidhi, Forum coordinator, Dr. Shivakumar, senior professor, and all the department teaching, non-teaching staffs, students were also presented during this event. Mr. Mallesh H. B. (Retd. Executive Engineer, PWD Dpt.), given inputs regarding the technical aspects of civil engineering, also he mentioned we should be proud to be the Civil Engineer. Also he mentioned in coming days there will be great demand for the civil engineers in the society/market.
The Civil engineering department has visited the markonahalli dam and melkote, the Industrial Visit Coordinator: Dr. Syeda Nikhat Fathima initiated the event along with Faculties accompanied by Dr.Vijay B G HOD-Civil, Dr.R Shivakumar, Mr.Santosha T, Mrs.Sreenidhi H M and Mr.BasavaPrabhu R (Lab Instructor). Markonahalli Dam is built across the river Shimsha in the Kunigal Taluk of Tumkur district. It was built by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the king of Mysore, under the guidance of his Diwan, Sir M Visweswaraiah. It was built to irrigate 6,070 hectares of land and has a masonry structure of 139 m and a pair of earth dams extending to 1,470 metres on either side. Industrial visits to dams and reservoirs offer students a practical, hands-on understanding of water resource management, engineering design, and environmental impact, supplementing theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom.
They can gain insights into the challenges and opportunities within the industry, helping them make informed decisions about their future career paths.
The SSSE college campuses in Tumkur , Karnataka, often has conducted tree plantation initiatives. Inaugurated by Dr. L Sanjeev Kumar, Principal These events, often organized by student clubs, civil and mechanical engineering departments. Aim to increase green cover, raise environmental awareness, and beautify the campus. Plantation drives are a way to educate students about the importance of trees and the need for environmental conservation.
Plantation drives encourage students to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle and contribute to a greener future. Students, faculty, and staff members often participate in planting saplings on designated areas of the campus.
